Headers and footers are useful elements to include in your PowerPoint presentations. They display information such as the date, slide numbers, and custom text or images. You may need to edit headers and footers if you want to update the date, change the text, or adjust their position on slides. Follow this simple guide to edit headers and footers in PowerPoint.
Access the Header & Footer Menu
- Open the PowerPoint presentation you want to edit headers and footers for.
- Select the Insert tab on the ribbon.
- Click the Header & Footer button in the Text group. Header and footer button
- The Header and Footer drop-down menu will appear. This menu contains all the editing options for slide headers and footers.
Edit the Date and Time
- To edit the date and time displayed in headers and footers, select Date and Time from the Header and Footer menu.
- Choose your preferred date and time format from the dialog box. Date and time formats
- You can also check the Update automatically box. This will update the date and time automatically every time you open or print the PowerPoint presentation.
- Click Apply to preview the changes.
Edit the Slide Number
- To edit which slides show numbers and the number formats, choose Slide number from the Header and Footer menu.
- In the dialog box, pick if you want slide numbers on All Slides or just This Section.
- Select your preferred number format. You can choose different formats like numerals, letters, or Roman numerals. Slide number formats
- Click Apply to see a preview of the slide number changes.
Add Custom Text
- To add text headers and footers, select [Type Text] from the Header and Footer menu.
- Click inside the text box and type your custom text.

- Click outside the text box when you are done typing and formatting.
Insert Images
- To add a logo or icon to headers and footers, click [Picture] in the Header and Footer menu.
- Select the image you want to insert from your computer files.
- Resize the image as needed once inserted on the slide.
Adjust Position of Headers and Footers
- By default, headers and footers are positioned at the bottom of slides. To change their position, click [Position] in the Header and Footer menu.
- Select your desired position – top-left, top-middle, top-right, bottom-left, bottom-middle, or bottom-right. Position slide elements
- The header and footer preview on the current slide will update. Click Apply to set the new position.
Edit Individual Slides
The above editing only applies globally to all slides. But you can also edit individual slides separately:
- On the slide you want unique headers or footers, go to the Insert tab and click Header & Footer.
- Select Custom Header… to open the formatting menu.
- Add unique text, dates, images as needed just for this slide.
- Click Apply to see a preview of your custom header or footer.
Remove Headers and Footers
- Access the Header & Footer menu and select [Type Text] .
- Highlight and delete any text currently displayed.
- If an image is inserted, click the image and press Delete on your keyboard.
- The headers and footers will be removed from the slides.
