Overview of the PowerPoint 2003 Interface

PowerPoint 2003 is a presentation graphics application that is part of the Microsoft Office 2003 suite. The PowerPoint window contains various components to help users quickly create presentations:

Toolbars

  • Standard toolbar – provides quick access to common functions like saving, printing, spell check.
  • Formatting toolbar – used to format text and align objects.
  • Drawing toolbar – contains tools for inserting shapes, WordArt, clip art etc.

Panes

  • Slides/Outline pane – shows slide thumbnails and outline view of presentation. Allows rearranging and adding/deleting slides.

Views

  • Normal view – main editing view with three panes.
  • Slide sorter view – thumbnail view to rearrange slides.

Key Components of the Interface

Toolbars

The main toolbars in PowerPoint 2003 are:

Creating New Presentations

To create new presentation:

  1. Click File > New
  2. Select blank presentation
  3. PowerPoint opens a new window with a blank title slide

Working with Slides

Insert New Slide

Click Home > New Slide or right-click on slide pane.

Delete Slide

Right-click slide in pane and select Delete Slide.

Copy/Move Slide

Click on slide, go to Home tab and use Cut/Copy/Paste buttons.

Rearrange Slides

In Slide Sorter view, click and drag slides to rearrange order.

Applying Design Themes

To change overall design:

  1. Go to Format menu
  2. Select Slide Design to see themes and color variations to apply.

Using Masters

Slide Master controls global design – background, font styles, theme colors etc.

To edit, select View > Master > Slide Master.

Notes Master controls appearance of presenter notes.

Handout Master controls appearance of printed handouts.

Printing and Saving

Print

Go to File menu, choose print options and click Print.

Save Presentation

Click File > Save or Save As. Choose location and file name.

Export Options

File menu also offers options to export presentation to Word, PDF etc.
